Sheraton Guilin details

Arrive at Guilin airport and take a taxi to the Sheraton Guilin. This hotel is 4 to 5 stars by ‘Western’ standards, is very comfortable, and in a great location—walking distance to shopping and eating.

Tips:

A big advantage of staying here is that there is English-speaking staff and the concierge can pretty much arrange most (if not all) of what you want to do in town.
Also, look for special internet rates/deals when booking this hotel.

Taxi for a Day details

If you like following structured tours (and like to pay much more), book those through the Sheraton concierge or any of the prolific travel agencies in town. Otherwise, book a taxi driver for a day (through the Sheraton concierge). This turned out to be one of the best deals of our entire trip (see cost details), and our taxi driver (Mr. Yu) was basically like a tour guide, with a local flair. He only spoke Mandarin though, so if you (and the rest of your party) don’t speak Mandarin, you lose out on that feature. Also, Mr. Yu went above and beyond his duties and escorted us to all the attraction ticket booths, as well as met us at the attraction exits, to make our day most efficient.

Tips: The way it works is your taxi driver brings you wherever you want to go (in town). He/she basically takes you door-to-door and waits for you to return. (We were especially lucky, because our driver lent us a spare mobile phone, just in case we couldn't find him.) Consider taking your driver's advice on where to go (and what time of the day). BTW, you don't pay the driver until the end of the day, so don't worry about getting stranded.

Reed Flute Cave details

Reed Flute Cave is the single most impressive site in the city of Guilin, when you’re talking purely about a visual spectacle. It consists of massive caverns filled with stalactites/stalagmites and numerous pools. Yes, the multi-colored lighting is a bit tacky, but it makes for some nice pictures. My favorite place in the cave was the “dragon’s lair”—a HUGE chamber with what looks like a treasure mound in the middle and several pools of crystal clear water.

Tips:

This place is really popular (for good reason), so it’s advisable to go first thing in the morning. The walking tour throughout the caverns lasts about 50 minutes or so. The walk itself is pretty easy (proper footpath and steps), though it can be quite dark at times. Be prepared to be accosted by local merchants selling all sorts of souvenirs as you leave the site.

If you’re interested in all things pearl, there is a pearl museum/store on the drive from Reed Flute Cave back to town.

This is a fairly large place—‘official’ tours take their unsuspecting tourists there to make their commission. For those not interested in pearl jewelry, consider trying the various pearl skin creams. They are very inexpensive for ‘Western’ standards, and my mother-in-law claims the pearl cream with ginseng has worked wonders for her face and those of her siblings.

Lunch at a local restaurant details

Once back in the Guilin city center, have lunch at a local restaurant. We went to a good one on Binjiang Rd with live animals (for eating) displayed proudly in front. This included chickens, fish, snakes, and bamboo rats. Bamboo rats aren’t normal rats, mind you; they’re about a foot long, round/chubby, and they eat bamboo. The cups/plate/utensils were delivered to our table shrink-wrapped—now that’s clean.

We didn’t see very many places with menus in English, but fortunately we had Chinese speakers and readers in our party. If you’re a picky eater, just stick with what you know… fried rice, vegetables, tofu, simple chicken/pork/beef dishes, etc. Of course, you have to try famous Guilin mifen (rice noodles). It usually is served in a hot broth with different varieties of meat or vegetables (tons of combinations).

General Directions:

From the Sheraton Guilin, turn right out the front doors and follow Binjiang Rd until reaching ZhongShan Rd. Turn right on ZhongShan Rd. Wang Jiao food emporium should be up one to two blocks on the same side of the street, at the street corner nearest you, on the second floor. It has large windows, and should stand out due to the light and activity inside.
