Across the street is the infamous U.S. Capitol Building. The Legislative headquarters is one of Washington D.C.’s and the United States most recognizable and visited buildings. This must see landmark has made many appearances throughout cinematic history from several angles.

Behind the Capitol is one of Washington DC’s most breathtaking interiors, the Library of Congress’ Reading Room. The Reading Room floor is busy with researching scholars who are dwarfed by the magnificent statues of the world’s great thinkers. The library was used in the following films:

The Judicial Branch was the only one of the three government branches to not be included on the National Mall. Also behind the Capitol and next to the Library of Congress the Supreme Court is a stoic building, whose entrance is guarded by two large statues of Lady Justice. Like the Library of Congress, this collection of our nation’s history is most often used as a setting for research. Nicholas Cage stole the Declaration of Independence from its home at the National Archives in National Treasure. Kevin Costner from the movie JFK, searched its corridors for clues to the Kennedy assassination.

When you leave the National Archives go left on Pennsylvania Avenue and walk one block to the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Headquarters. Many thrillers, crime investigations, and mysteries often involve the properly trained field agents of the FBI. Movies filmed at the building include:

This famous neighborhood is home to many politicians, as well as sets to numerous movies. The rows of houses, cobblestone streets and traditional feel of the area makes this a potentially ideal setting. The most famous cinema landmark is at 3600 Prospect Street. It is the house from The Exorcist seen on the poster with the ray of light beaming from an upstairs window. Next to the house are the steep stairs where Father Damien Karras plunged to his death.

The Dupont Circle neighborhood is one of Washington D.C.’s most urban communities and also one of the trendiest. Unique stores and popular restaurants fill the sidewalks around this cinematic favorite of traffic circles. Movies include:

End the day by the Reflecting Pool and Lincoln Memorial. This memorial is the most filmed in Washington, DC, appearing in dozens of movies. It is often portrayed in a somber and reflective tone where characters like Jimmy Stewart’s Jefferson Smith go to be inspired by the American Spirit.
