My family is coming up from Southern California for Thanksgiving weekend. I plan to show them around town and get them super jealous of the beautiful Napa Valley and San Francisco Bay Area… hopefully they will have a great time too. Some wineries still offer free tasting, while other wineries now charge anywhere from $6-10. I did not list the wine tasting fees for each place because I do not know them, if somebody out there does, please feel free to add the cost information to the item, thanks!

We invite you to visit us at Bouchaine Vineyards, in the heart of the Carneros wine country in Napa Valley. We have a Wine Visitor Center complete with a wine tasting room where you can taste and purchase our latest Bouchaine Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays and any exclusive wines sold only in the tasting room. A deck and terrace beckon with dramatic views of the vine-covered rolling hills of Carneros. Bouchaine’s tasting room is now open seven days a week!
Founded in 1981, the current winery produces fewer than 20,000 cases annually, predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. About 1,000 cases of limited release wines are also produced, including a Cabernet Franc and a dessert wine. Renovated in 1995, the winery retained the historic architecture of the original buildings and still employs a traditional Burgundian method of producing Pinot Noir in open-top concrete fermenter. Several wines have won awards. Wine tasting is free.

In 1976 the now famous Bicentennial blind wine tasting pitted California wines against French wines. The shocking result was that a California cabernet sauvignon bested all the bordeaux reds. The wine? The 1973 release from Stag’s Leap. That one event not only enhanced Stag’s Leap reputation, it put Napa County on the international wine map. The news was stupendous to winery founder Warren Winiarski (Polish surname meaning “winemaker’s son”). Ever since, the winery has continued to produce outstanding cabernet sauvignons. Reserve wines are expensive, but other decent wines are also marketed under a second, more affordable label (Hawk Crest.)

Swiss millionaire Donald Hess displays a portion of his magnificent art collection at this renovated Christian Brothers Winery. The original stone structures built in 1903 were retained in the new facility, which also includes an audio-visual room, a 13,000-square-foot art gallery and an upscale store. While the wines are simple by Napa standards, they are both decent and affordable. The winery produces two varietals, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, under two different labels: The Hess Collection (produced from Napa grapes, $15-35) and the bargain label Hess Select, made with grapes from Monterey County. With three vineyards, an 1850’s farm house for winetasting and a list of activities, you can’t help being overwhelmed. Events are also held year-round, such as the Cline Jazz Festival and the Winter Winemaker Dinner.
This was a pretty cool winery, with a quaint little shop. The people working there were nice, and seemed to genuinely enjoy both what they were doing, as well as having you there. They’re whites were OK, but the thing that jumped out at me was that most of their reds had black pepper added. It was definitely noticeable… almost too noticeable. If you like a peppery red this is the place for you. Just as a side note, not all of their reds are peppery. I liked their 2003 Ancient Vines Mourvedre enough to buy a bottle!!

How do we figure?
The total price (per person) of your trip is an approximate value. Our members enter prices in ranges (ie. 10 - 20 USD per entree at a restaurant). Then, depending on the travel style you have selected for yourself, we estimate how much we think you would spend (ie. If your travel style is "inexpensive," you would probably end up spending $10 at the mentioned restaurant). It's all hokey science, but if you are like us and travel on a budget, knowing approximately how much you will spend on a trip is of utmost importance.

Looks like you have a good plan. Where are they coming from? Not that it matters…anyone would be impressed with that area!
Posted 624 days ago.Hi Christine, thanks for checking out my plan! I grew up in the Napa Valley area and I simply love it there. Visiting is just such a great escape from everyday life. I chose what I thought were the best wineries (info from their official homepage) and I used some already inputted locations in S.F.
