Back by popular demand… my second Berkeley trip plan! I just wanted to let you know I’m only doing this trip plan because Berkeley is the only city (as far as I know) that celebrates “Indigenous People’s Day” instead of Columbus Day… Berkeley’s so awesome because of this…
Seriously though, this trip plan really shows off another side of Berkeley, where the “locals” go. Highlights from this trip include Tilden Park, Solano Avenue, Berkeley’s Farmers Market, and Indian Rock. I also threw in some high class eating, which is the finest of fine dining, Chez Panisse, and the highest class hotel in town, The Claremont Resort & Spa. You really can’t go wrong with either of these choices.
The Beautiful Berkeley Trip Plan

Known as the “grandfather of specialty coffee,” Peet’s Coffee & Tea has been a Berkeley institution since we started more than four decades ago.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Peet’s Coffee & Tea was a pioneer among other food purveyors in Berkeley’s “gourmet ghetto” – a collection of European style shops and restaurants that later included the Cheese Board and Chez Panisse – whose emphasis on artisan, fresh foods spawned an American revolution.

One of my standard “go back” places. Plenty of room, good service. They do interesting things with the pancakes and the oatmeal (even with apple juice!). Food is fresh and ample. They have special health conscience meals as well. Sometimes I go later and they never rush me. A great place to sit and chat. Easy to get to and pretty good parking.

Alice and Chez Panisse have become convinced that the best-tasting food is organically grown and harvested in ways that are ecologically sound, by people who are taking care of the land for future generations. The quest for such ingredients has largely determined the restaurant’s cuisine. Chez Panisse has tried for years to make diners here partake of the immediacy and excitement of vegetables just out of the garden, fruit right off the branch, and fish straight out of the sea. In doing so, Chez Panisse has stitched together a patchwork of over sixty nearby suppliers, whose concerns, like the restaurant’s, are environmental harmony and optimal flavor.
Prices for the Restaurant are $50 Mondays, $65 Tuesdays through Thursdays and $85 Fridays and Saturdays, not including beverage, a 17% service charge and 8.75% tax. Monday night menus are generally simpler and more rustic or regional than what the restaurant serves on other evenings. Friday and Saturday night menus are somewhat more elaborate. (information chunked from the Chez Panisse homepage)

The best gelato in the Bay Area. Period.
Perfect texture. Intense flavor. Freshly made daily. Standouts on the gelato side include Nutella, Panna Cotta, Espresso and Cassata. If you like black licorice, you will be reach nirvana… I’m not a fan of black licorice but I tasted the gelato and have to say that it is the epitome of black licorice which for some folks, oddly enough, is a good thing. The sorbettos are unbelievable. For my vegan friends, this place is heaven because they taste so creamy yet they have no dairy in them at all. Watermelon, Grapefruit, and Lemon are my favorite combo. Pineapple is great, too. For the first time in my life I think I’d pick sorbetto over gelato. . .the sorbettos are that good. The textures are so perfect on both the gelato and sorbetto. . .especially the sorbetto . . .incredible!
This place is not cheap but you get what you pay for and it is the best. People keep commenting on the decor (or lack thereof) but I get it. . .it’s so all about the product, something I can appreciate. Staff is friendly and will let you taste anything you’d like. I went with a bunch of friends one night and while we ordered half the case, the girl behind the counter brought us little bites of flavors we hadn’t ordered but thought we might like to try. Nice!
Must try for any ice cream or gelato lover…

Oh how I do love my Cheese Board. There two key reasons why this is the best cheese shop in the Bay Area.
First of all, they don’t sell you wine at marked up prices. In fact, they don’t sell you wine at all. These people are pure cheese. If there is ever anything that you need to know about cheese, cheese accessories, and what things to eat cheese with then this is the place you need to be. Actually, this first point is really just about cheese. They specialize in it, and you know that you’ll get the best here.
The second thing is the bread. Aside from being the best cheese shop in the Bay Area, Cheese Board arguably takes the cake for best bread bakery as well. Why? There’s no cake, donuts or odd cookies here. Just any type of fantastic bread, scone, muffin, baguette, roll, bun or other carbtastic treat you could think of. I swear, the cheese rolls and the cheese onion curry bread is ridonculous. Great for breakfast on the go.
OMG THIS PLACE IS THE BEST!!
Berkeley, CA 94709
Hours:
Go next door during lunch and dinner hours to get Cheeseboard’s specialty pizza. One flavor a day is served, but it always tastes so darn good no matter what flavor it is, it doesn’t really matter. Don’t expect normal pizza, this stuff is one-of-a-kind.

The Adventure Playground at the Berkeley Marina was opened in 1979. It is a wonderfully unique outdoor facility where staff encourage children to play and build creatively. Kids climb on the many strange, kid designed built forts, boats, and towers. Ride a zip line or use tools like a hammer, saw, and paint (under supervision). By providing low risk activities Adventure Playground creates opportunities for children to learn cooperation, meet physical challenges and gain self confidence. I used to play here as a kid and I’ve always remembered how fun and different this place was, this was probably the first time I used a hammer to really try and build something.
Currently, about 1,000 adventure playgrounds exist in Europe, largely in Denmark, Switzerland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, and in England. In Germany alone there are some 400 adventure playgrounds. Japan has a significant number of adventure playgrounds as well.
In the U.S. there are currently two adventure playgrounds, in Berkeley, California and in Huntington Beach, California. The Adventure Playground in Berkeley celebrated its 25th birthday in 2004. The adventure playground in Huntington Beach was one of the first adventure playgrounds in the U.S. and has been around since the 1970s. Up until this year there were three adventure playgrounds in Houston, Texas as well as a Houston Adventure Play Association. They closed due to a loss of funding. Many of the adventure playgrounds that existed in the U.S. closed for similar reasons, either loss of funding or loss of the lease on the land.

Spenger’s is the safe-but-pricey restaurant you go to with your parents because they don’t want haute cuisine or exotic food or a cheap hole in the wall. The gigantic building is divided into several different rooms, all decorated with maritime relics. (There’s a room whose ceiling is covered with wine corks, another room has a huge sword fish on the wall as well as a giant sea turtle.) Seafood is king here, and you can pay a tycoon’s ransom eating it, but you can also find cheap options like fish and chips or sandwiches. The clam chowder is pretty good; unfortunately, my favorite item, the oyster po boy, isn’t on the menu any more, but the crab cake sandwich is a suitable replacement. If my parents are treating, I’d get the captain’s platter full of deepfried seafood goodness. I think Spenger’s is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, restaurant in Berkeley and it went through numerous ownership changes, the most recent one being a few years back; I miss the cute china-creamy white with blue ocean-themed drawings on the border-and the craggy old servers that lolled about. Surprisingly, the huge restaurant can be full and you might have to wait at the bar, but thankfully, it’s a full bar. If you don’t wanna stay, they have a takeout window. There is a paid parking lot across the street and Spenger’s validates.

Fat Apple’s is what neighborhood restaurants used to be… in actual neighborhoods. The food is plain, good ‘ol American, not dressed up at all or fusioned with anything. You might say it is boring but the food is so damn yummy! The burgers here are great with sesame seed buns, but they also have all the other comfort foods such as spaghetti, meatloaf, homemade potpie, and of course… pie. Not much of a first date place, but it is one of those places you will always come back to… senior friendly (enjoy the delicious pie!) and kid friendly as well (oddly enough it stays pretty quiet). The neat thing about this place is all of the Jack London decor and memorabilia here (they used to have newspaper clippings embedded in some of the tables, but alas those have since been removed).

Little Farm is a lovely piece of Tilden Park where goats, chickens, turkeys, cows, and sheep munch happily on the lettuce and celery kids and curious adults provide. It’s not a petting zoo per se because you aren’t in the same enclosure with animals for full contact, but the creatures are tame and love people because they know we provide food. Children do get up close with the animals and can definitely pet them as they are fed. The farm has several small fenced pastures where cows, goats, and sheep graze, as well as a little barn where baby animals live. If you go in the spring, you are guaranteed to see babies, though there always seem to be chicks and ducklings. The animals have plenty of hay and grass to chew, but you’re allowed to bring lettuce and celery (no other vegetables, though!) for them. They love it! The chickens and ducks, too, will indulge in some fresh greens. The Little Farm is a fun place even if you’re not a kid. If you do bring kids, make sure that they know what’s proper behavior around animals; I’ve seen some kids get overexcited and get out of control around the animals.

Lake Anza is a small, artificially made, nine-acre lake surrounded by a beautiful walking trail, forests and a mountainous landscape. Lake Anza offers swimming, fishing and sunbathing in a beautiful Berkeley hills nature setting. The area is so nice that on sunny weekends it is most often found with a “No Admittance, Beach Full” sign posted at the entrance. So if you come early you might get lucky and avoid the rush, but braving the crowds is well worth it if your looking for fun and relaxation under the Berkeley sun. Lake Anza was created in 1939 by damming part of Wildcat Creek. The original purpose of the lake was to water the lawns of the Tilden golf course but it has certainly been put to much better use! So pack a lunch and bring your friends, kids, towels and bathing suits and head on over.

Nice to see that someone mentioned Tilden Park in places to go with toddlers. For the last two Saturdays I’ve been taking my 2.5 year old to Lake Anza. It’s quite wonderful. There is a nice “beach” for plenty of sand play and the water is roped off to mark where the lake gets deeper. The first six or eight feet from the beach to the first rope is a gradual decline to about two feet deep making it ideal for my fearless toddler to walk out into (his) neck deep water. There are LOTS of other young kids to play with and always seem to be plenty of unclaimed buckets and shovels in case you forget yours. On the edge of the “beach” is a large grassy area if you prefer and there are at least two lifeguards on duty.

I have been coming here for years and there is no doubt spectacular and awe-inspiring views here. Walk, rollerblade, bike or skip for 4 miles, very popular place for a great paved path. The most notable part of the walk is in the Peace Grove on the way up. Many years ago my cousin and I rollerbladed to the very end of the path, we had no idea when or if it would end, but sure enough after 4 miles, the road ended. Of course we were both exhausted, but thrilled to have completed the journey… the problem was we still had another 4 miles to get back to the parking lot!! Great times… No Admission.

I have been going to this restaurant since before I can remember and I continue to eat hear with my family about once a month. The food and atmosphere reminds you of that old-fashioned home-style cooking that you simply cannot find anymore. Service is exceptional. The fried chicken is made fresh to order and is perfectly crisp, tender and juicy. The tastiest and juciest prime rib in Berkeley (Albany) is served here. I also love the N.Y. steak. Minestrone soup is served on Saturdays and there are daily specials. Poultry is always extremely fresh. Selection of fruit pies are made fresh daily and you can choose from over a dozen different kinds. I would have to say that this place has the BEST apple pie I have ever tasted. The owner of the restaurant is also the chef, somebody that will take pride in preparing the meals.

How do we figure?
The total price (per person) of your trip is an approximate value. Our members enter prices in ranges (ie. 10 - 20 USD per entree at a restaurant). Then, depending on the travel style you have selected for yourself, we estimate how much we think you would spend (ie. If your travel style is "inexpensive," you would probably end up spending $10 at the mentioned restaurant). It's all hokey science, but if you are like us and travel on a budget, knowing approximately how much you will spend on a trip is of utmost importance.
