Suave San Francisco

I had a fantastic time on this trip. Stayed at the extremely elegant and courteous Orchard Hotel, which is located within walking distance of both Union Square, Chinatown and the cable car station that gets visitors around town. My favorite spots are the Golden Gate Bridge, the boat cruises to Alcatraz Island and Angel Island, the Palace of Fine Arts (feed the ducks!), and Pier 39. Choices of fantastic restaurants are endless. San Francisco really has so many districts and so much culture that I could easily spend another week here and not even come close to covering everything this great city has to offer.

yargggg.. all you landblubbering munckins at the fisherman’s wharf.. before you walk the plank at pier 39 don’t forget to check out the other neighborhood joints too around the avenues off of geary or in the streets around the mission. both boast great, authentic ethnic cuisine (the richmond and sunset districts move beyond the more touristy traditional ‘chinatown’ area to what is dubbed the ‘second chinatown’ with a great variety from korean bbq to fresh japanese sashimi to 4 ‘king of noodle’ thai spots and mission’s got great mexican burritos in addition to the amazing salvadorean pupusas, argentinian biztek and indian ice-cream joints (complete with saffron and tandoori ice-cream as well as the standard flavors such as green tea and lychee..)..

San Francisco Chinatown is full of history. When you go to Chinatown, Grant is the tourist hangout. Stockton Street is the locals’ hangout. You’ll be amazed at the food stands, the grocery stores. Some historic sites are: the Saint Mary’s Churck on Grant and California (the oldest in SF?); the Cameron House on Sockton and Sacramento (where the smuggled Chinese girls were provided sanctuary during the turn of the century); the Chinese School on Stockton (when Chinese children were not allowed to go to public schools); and many of the family associations (the tongs which provide social services/welfare support to immigrants from their villages). Great site, great learning experience.

Great comments Susan! In fact they are so wonderful I’ve added them to the S.F. Chinatown description! If you have such great comments like these, feel free to input them directly to the item description so everyone can share the information!
