Tips: I got this ticket the previous October as part of BA's "100 years of flight" promotion for $436 round-trip. I practically shat myself when I bought the ticket, because (a) I paid that little, and (b) I realized I was actually going to the UK.
I parked at LAX at a place called Johnny Park. It was cheap—$100—but the shuttle service to the airport sucked. I had to call them three times before a shuttle showed up.
Yes, this is where the bombings happened a few years later.
Leaving from: Going to:
Tips: The tube wasn't running (for whatever reason) that day, so they bused us from Heathrow to Acton Town. I then took Acton Town into London to Russell Square. It saved me some money, actually, because the bus ride was free, and it took me about two zones into London, I think.
A nifty covered market that’s been featured in all sorts of movies: Harry Potter and Tomb Raider spring to mind.
Telephone: Hours:
General Directions:
The market is located to the south of Leadenhall Street between Gracechurch Street and Lime Street. The nearest underground stations are Bank and Monument.
I got a pre-paid phone chip for my “mobile handset” (as they say in the local parlance).

Tips:
I had a tri-band phone from Cingular, and I got a pre-paid SIM card (with a UK number) for my phone. It worked out great, and was LOTS cheaper than trying to call home through Cingular’s international roaming. I paid 30 quid for ALL my calls, and I called home nearly every day.
Independent travel to Dover On fast train services, trains to Dover Priory station from London take about 1 hour 50 minutes. You can travel either from Victoria station or from Charing Cross (services are usually about every 30 minutes). During the morning and afternoon there is usually a free shuttle bus service to take you from the station to the ferry port. It takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to travel by coach from Victoria Coach Station in London to Dover (some services will take you directly to the ferry port or hoverport).
I’m not even sure where this is, but it’s this little pub and restaurant in Kent. The fish is fantastic, and the local beer is very (cough) strong. (No cost information because my relatives paid! ;)
Tips: The BritRail pass means you don't get an assigned seat, so be prepared to sit on the floor. I was lucky to have a conductor come by and take pity on me, and he led me up to a free seat in FIRST CLASS! That guy was awesome.
This place reminded me of a college dorm more than anything else. It had private bathrooms, but the entire bathroom would fit inside a normal, U.S.-sized tub. It was noisy, and they made you drop off your key at the front desk before you left for a night out. Weird.
The ill-fated train trip to get to Haddon Hall. Cheap little diesel cars, though—no engine to speak of. They were kind of like buses on rails. They nearly shook themselves to pieces, too.
This was sort of a red herring, because I tried to go on Good Friday, and the trains were all on holiday schedules. So I didn’t wind up going here. I made it as far as Buxton, but couldn’t make it into Bakewell without spending an obscene amount of money on a taxi. Tsk.
Anyway, Haddon Hall is allegedly where (far enough back) my family’s well-to-do parts had an estate. Hmph.

Parking is available in the main Car Park, on the other side of the A6 and the distance to the Hall is about 400 yards, please take great care crossing the busy road. A courtesy mini-bus is available.

So, I don’t know exactly where we went, but it was pretty nuts. There was one place with really high ceilings, and another place with glass that overlooked the Tyne river. Cost was nothing, because my kind hosts were paying tonight.

If there’s a fight in the bar, and you happen to be standing in front of the nearest exit (and the fight is coming toward you), open the exit door and stand behind it.
Go and see this sculpture—it’s about as big as a 737 that’s been planted tail-first into the ground. Massive. Incredibly impressive.
The project to build the sculpture began in 1994 and was completed in 1998 costing 1million pounds and funded mostly by the National Lottery. The wings have to withstand winds of over 100mph (160km/h). There is over 165tons (150tonnes) of concrete to anchor the foundation that runs 20metres down into the ground.

This was the last hotel of my journey, and I wanted to spend some money on comfort. This place was extremely trendy, but also extremely hospitable. They even called a cab to the airport at 5 in the morning.

The desk agents are extremely cute. Maybe that’s just Scottish girls in general.

Instead of making a big loop with this trip, on the advice of a friend, I decided to take a local short-hop carrier back to London on my last day to connect out. It was a really cheap way to go.

Tips: The food on board is surprisingly good. And they give you your choice of newspapers as you step onto the plane. Sweet!

The total price (per person) of your trip is an approximate value. Our members enter prices in ranges (ie. 10 - 20 USD per entree at a restaurant). Then, depending on the travel style you have selected for yourself, we estimate how much we think you would spend (ie. If your travel style is "inexpensive," you would probably end up spending $10 at the mentioned restaurant). It's all hokey science, but if you are like us and travel on a budget, knowing approximately how much you will spend on a trip is of utmost importance.
