Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza was the mayor city of the Post classic Maya. It was a place for mystery and magic, and power so pervasive , that centuries after its decline it was considered holy. Monumental architecture marks the center of a city that in its day covered more than 25 sq kilometers.
Settlers appeared in the area as early as 300 B.C., but not until 750 A.D. is there evidence of urban planning. By 900 A.D. and under the Maya, Chichén Itzá is a thriving metropolis of 50,000 inhabitants. Admission: $8.25USD (free on Sunday and holidays and for children under 13)

Tips:
You can travel to Chichen-Itza by daily travel agency tours (about $370 pesos, some tours include meals), rental car, or public bus lines that leave approximately every hour. If you drive yourself, parking is $10 pesos. You can easily do the trip and return to Merida by the evening, or you can stay overnight. If you do stay, be sure to enjoy the wonderful Light & Sound Show that is held every evening.
