Stag's Leap Wine Cellars
In 1976 the now famous Bicentennial blind wine tasting pitted California wines against French wines. The shocking result was that a California cabernet sauvignon bested all the bordeaux reds. The wine? The 1973 release from Stag’s Leap. That one event not only enhanced Stag’s Leap reputation, it put Napa County on the international wine map. The news was stupendous to winery founder Warren Winiarski (Polish surname meaning “winemaker’s son”). Ever since, the winery has continued to produce outstanding cabernet sauvignons. Reserve wines are expensive, but other decent wines are also marketed under a second, more affordable label (Hawk Crest.)
