Karl, this trip plan is awesome. So many fantastic tips and even though I have been many times to Berkeley, I haven’t done half of these things. Guess I’ll just have to visit you there again :)

I agree with Andrew, Top Dog hot dogs are some of the best I’ve ever tasted. My two favorites are the lemon chicken and the original Top Dog, of course.

.. and very good pizza at zachary’s, but that is not the only good pizza joint around.. arinelle’s pizza on shattuck in downtown berkeley has great ny style thin crust pizzas, and cheeseboard on shattuck near cedar and rose has excellent california fusion style pizza with goatcheese, sundried tomatos (though i say to-maaaa-toes..) and other fresh produce-style tasties..

Susan says:

Berkeley has some of the best cafes. Peet’s Coffee originated in Berkeley at the Walnut Square, north Berkeley (Shattuck and Vine). The area is called the Gourmet Ghetto—Alice Walker’s Chez Panisse is there; so are Cheese Board, French Hotel, Masse’s Bakery, and an excellent Thai restaurant…

Susan says:

Oh, also breads. Semi-Freddie’s, Acme’s, and Cheese Board’s breads are some of the best you can ever find.

Susan says:

Berkeley is home to a number of Julia Morgan buildings. She is the creator of the Hearst Castle. Among them are: the Julia Morgan Theater on College Avenue, the Bancroft Hotel (next to La Strada), the Hearst Gymnasium at UC Campus, etc.
There is a beautiful Maybeck’s Christian Science Church on Dwight and Bowditch…
Berkeley is just full of history and charm.
